SOME CONTEXT
There are around 4.3 million self-employed workers in the UK, and a broader shift towards freelance, contract-based, and portfolio careers. Part-time self-employment in particular has increased over time, representing a meaningful portion of the workforce which is defined, in part, by variability. Hours change week on week and are unfixed, and opportunities arise with limited notice.
But childcare remains pretty fixed, operating on the basis of consistency that creates a structural mismatch: regular attendance, advance booking, predictable schedules. While work's becoming more fluid, childcare remains…not.
And so All Work No Childcare was born. To challenge what childcare could look like if it was built around variability rather than consistency, and to ultimately close the gap between how parents work and the way they live.

We surveyed 100 parents in the Stroud district about work, childcare, and what their lives would look like if a flexible coworking space with on-site childcare existed nearby.

We're running a series of small subsidised pop-ups for anyone wanting to get stuff done while their children are cared for with professional crèche staff. These smaller sessions hosted across a range of venues tell us what could work well in future, anything we need to be aware of, and how much demand there is in the future.
